Meet Your Therapist
Jenny Hutchens
I've been an occupational therapist for over 37 years, and in that time, I've learned that this work isn't really about assessments and reports, it's about people. It's about creating pathways to the life someone wants to live, removing barriers that shouldn't exist in the first place, and championing the kind of independence and choice that many of us take for granted.
Why I Started This Practice
In 2025, I made the decision to step out on my own and launch jpd occupational therapy. After decades of working within larger systems, I realised that the best way for me to continue doing what I do well: truly person-centred, unhurried, meaningful therapy, was to create a practice built around that vision.
A Bit About Me Beyond The Clinic
Melbourne born and bred, I share my home with family, spend time helping my elderly parents, and can usually be found pottering around the house, nose-deep in a book, or daydreaming about my next adventure, whether that's under canvas or at 30,000 feet.
I bring the same values to my personal life as I do to my work: connection, curiosity, and a deep appreciation for the everyday moments that make life worthwhile.
Three Decades of Experience, One Consistent Belief
My career has taken me across diverse settings: public health, community mental health, aged care, and NGO services in both Australia and the UK. I've witnessed seismic shifts in how we support people with disability: the closure of institutions, the evolution of community-based care, and more recently, the introduction of the NDIS in 2013.
Through all of it, one thing has never changed: my conviction that people with disability deserve opportunities, skill development, and genuine choice.
NDIS Focus
Since 2019, I've focused exclusively on NDIS-funded services, working predominantly with individuals and families navigating intellectual disability, autism, and neurodevelopmental conditions. This is where my heart is, supporting people in the environments where they actually live, learn, and connect.
My Strengths? Experience, Warmth, And A Sense Of Humour
If you asked me what I bring to the table, I'd say this: I've seen a lot, I genuinely care, and I don't take myself too seriously. Therapy doesn't need to feel clinical or stiff. Some of the best progress happens when people feel comfortable enough to laugh, ask questions, and be themselves.
At the end of the day, I provide the kind of occupational therapy service I'd want for myself or my family. That's my benchmark.
Occupational therapy isn't about fixing people, it’s about removing barriers and building capacity.
I believe every person has the right to participate fully in life, on their own terms.
